CHRISTMAS MUSIC ALREADY?!
It seems with every passing year Christmas music starts to play on the radio and in stores earlier and earlier. Some find it annoying, while others can’t wait to say, “Bring on the Christmas tunes!”. Whether you fall into the former or the latter category, Whissell’s “One Wish” will certainly be one Christmas tune everyone will be wishing for.
HOLIDAY CONFECTION
Whissell (real name Lauren Whistle) has released her second (yes, second!) Christmas tune and it doesn’t disappoint. Last year’s “All I Ever Get For Christmas Is Blue” showed us a more melancholic side to Whissell’s Christmas spirit. This year, however, she brings us a charming, alt-pop confection that you will not get sick of hearing.
When I listen to it, I picture myself smiling as I playfully bop to the beat and delight on chocolate candies from an advent calendar. It just makes you feel good! Now you might not want to gorge out on candy like me, but I bet you will at least catch yourself shamelessly singing “One Wish” in your car like no one is watching. But don’t forget… someone IS watching.
Santa.
So you better sing it well, otherwise no presents for you! Just kidding.
YOU CAN RING MY BELL
In all seriousness though, “One Wish” is a fun, light-hearted, midtempo tune with a ‘doo wop’ feel that rings all the right bells at all the right times, literally. With jingle bell sounds that don’t overwhelm, bright guitar licks, zippy horn tracks, well-placed ‘claps’, and cheery ‘oohs’ as background vocals, it has all the ingredients to become a new Christmas classic. Additionally, Whissell’s vocals compliment the song very well. Her soulful tone and alto range add a sort of ‘weight’ to the lightness of the song in a great way.
LICENSABILITY
“One Wish” is so enjoyable it should be on the soundtrack to the sequel to the Christmas movie classic “Love Actually.” Ok, so they’re not really making a sequel, but a girl can wish, can’t she! At the very least, “One Wish” would probably help sell a lot of holiday sweaters if Old Navy ever decided to license it out (hint hint Old Navy!!!). ‘Cause “One Wish” would be a perfect fit in one of their commercials (pun intended).
Speaking of licensing…
In just a few short years, Whissell’s music has already been licensed by Netflix, HBO, ABC, and NBC. Not bad, girl! Way to hustle!

Christmas music has become integral to the celebration of the holiday. Along with snow, pine trees, and decorative lights, Christmas simply does not feel like Christmas without it! So make sure to tell Santa that your ONE WISH is for this song to be added to your holiday music playlist. Heck, what am I saying? You don’t need Santa to do that! Go ahead and download it yourself! Pssh… Santa’s too busy anyway eating cookies, training his reindeer, fixin’ the sleigh, and snugglin’ up on Mrs. Claus!
We sincerely hope this will become a new Christmas classic. Besides, some of the ‘classics’ are getting a little stale. Anyone else about ready to retire The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping”? It can’t be just me.
