Daniella Mason Lets Us Into Her “Mental State”
This weeks’ featured artist, Daniella Mason, is not only known as a notable songwriter, but this pop phenom has launched her 2nd EP stating her massive presence inside of the pop community. Mason launched her first EP “Emotional State” in the fall of last year. The album represents one of four EP’s launching this year, collectively titled “State of Mine”. The second EP, “Mental State” launched June of 2019. Putting her thoughts into words, needless to say, we are captivated by Mason’s honesty.
This Album Is So Mental
“Story-wise, Mental State was the obvious next EP for me,” Mason explains. “My journey through my emotional state and past pain lead me straight to my brain where all of my memories were stored, causing me to have to face some things up there. Previously, my mind had been a place I had only gotten lost in, essentially making me afraid to go there… It’s been a new experience for me, and I hope these EPs continue to reveal more and more of what’s been hidden.”
Mental State is a journey through ones mind, uncovering emotions and thoughts hidden behind every layer.
Deepest of Wells
This nuanced single plays on the metaphors of diving into the crevices of someones mind as you would dive into water. Therefore skating in and out of Mason’s mind and the aquatic metaphor. This single jumps into the deepest of thoughts inside of your own mind. Forcing a voyage down the rivers of your neurons you may or may not have explored prior to. All the while, the intoxicating production adds value to the landscape’s ambiance in your mind. Layering in some nostalgia with elements of 90’s R&B production. Conjured up by the marriage of Mason’s soothing vocals, introspective lyrics, and conceptual production. This single is a tender intro to a project that dives deeper into the layers of your mind with each song.
Girl in the Box
Changing up the tempo, “Girl in the Box” also changes up the narrative from diving into oneself, versus someone else. Mason battles the complex, yet honest and self reflective, thoughts of not being good enough. Failure, comparison, jealousy and more. Mason describes the “Girl in the Box” as her minds alter ego that makes an appearance from time to time. Altering her thoughts and her perspective and then battling with her true self. It’s almost like a mental tug-of-war. Back and forth! Catching your stray thoughts. Mason references lassoing them back in, while being mentally aware of this mental battle with ones self.
Get Me Out of My Head
Billboard deemed this single to be 1 of the 20 best pop songs of the summer, after a full play through, you’ll understand why. And don’t say we didn’t warn you of its melodic ability to make your body move unexpectedly. Lyrically, we continue our journey of the mind by diving a few more layers into the depth of this intellectual vessel. “Brain cells turn prison cells. Trapped in my mind don’t feed the monster inside.” Describes the endless battle with our minds. Tossing to and fro with the waves of life, and where our minds go, becoming aware of that, and pulling yourself out. With mental health often times being tandem with the arts, Mason lays down relatable lyrics to any creative.
What Goes Down Must Come Up
Mason takes us through the wildly relatable story of prebuilt walls around your heart. How, with the right person, the two can slowly dismantle those walls. Pulling it down brick by brick with the slow build of trust and stability. Layering in the pop, electronic production, it gives this pop bop life through an outerbody, euphoric feeling. Almost as if your floating through life on an untouchable cloud of emotions. A heavenly experience.
