I Need album artThis whole week we’ve been giving you all the Clark Beckham. Mag Cover. Red Couch Late Night interview. Must Be Hard Being You music video breakdown. Today we give you our take on his single I Need from his 2018 Year One.

I Need Love

When one is cooking a delicious meal it’s never just one item, or even one ingredient, that makes the taste what it is. Even more so for those that really cook, they know its sometimes doing the things people wont notice or adding a subtle note of garlic shavings that make the difference. Same goes for music. Theres the things on the surface that stand out, but it’s the subtleties underneath that bring it home. Clark Beckham does that perfectly in his single I Need.

I Need gives us the same thing. As you listen you notice Clark’s strong vocal performance over a rhythmic acoustic guitar, electric guitar licks and soft Jazz drums. The energy slow & melodic and building up. Although, just like a trained chef tasting the notes of rued onions and garlic shavings. For me what brings the song together is the brass. The subtle trumpets underneath it all. Barely noticable to the ear as the song plays, then when you start to notice it, they come to the forefront. Exploding your earbuds with delicious notes

I Need Peace

I’ve said it in articles past that I love when artists get really until their songwriting bag. When it’s well thought out and takes the listener through a new story with them. Listening all week to Clark’s songwriting just has me fan-girling. Every song I listen to my brain is able to process everything he is saying, relate to it, and invision a story playing out in my head.

This song is littered with line after line of relatable content. With each passing line is a brush stroke that paints a picture of finding love and yourself. I could go deep diving into each and what it makes me picture. Although, 1.) That would take forever to write & 2.) That means when you listen to it you’d paint the picture I wrote, and not one you imagine from his words. So just listen to it and make your own story ;).

I Need Faith

The beauty to the writing of the song is the ebbs and flows to this song. All done without a chorus or bridge; key components to song structure when trying to create those same ebbs & flows. Usually.

Clark writes in a way that creates a parallel between each section of the song. He separates each stanza through descriptions of a different need. He starts with love. A love with someon that will help him weather any storm. He moves on to peace. Finding that peace within himself that will put his mind and soul in a good place. Then comes faith. Falling into his faith that will allow him to know everything is going to work out. To take his fears away and reassure him. Then comes…

I Need You

The songs last stanza concludes with the last need being You. This is where the picture gets painted how you want it. This is where your tastebuds really get to figure out the meal. Who is You that he is referring to for him? A woman he wants to fall in love with. Or is it a God/Spiritual being that is who he is looking for a deeper connection to. More importantly, how are you receiving it? When you are imagining his words visually, how do you paint that picture in your mind when you hear it?

Take a listen and let us know what you heard!
