James Ross is a 22-year-old solo act with a laid-back, acoustic pop style that shares the most positive of vibes. Often compared to artists like Ed Sheeran and Jason Mraz, Ross throws down funky rhythms layered behind a soulful voice. His sound includes elements of Americana, pop, and even a little rock ‘n roll. Ross is in his element mixing sounds from electric guitar to lulling violins, all while rocking that American style of songwriting.
His latest EP “Clouds” was released in April, 2016, and is jam-packed with smooth, upbeat songs such as “Clouds” (the song title the EP was named after). Ross uses the metaphor of floating clouds as a feeling toward life. What is normally blocking the bright and shining sun is flipped around in this song, because, as Ross shows us, it’s all about perspective. This kind of songwriting fits his stripped-down sound perfectly. It’s just a guy breaking down what life is about in the purest way.
A Journey Between Cities
A child of three cities, Ross grew up in Pittsburgh, London, and Seattle. This childhood introduced him to many different musical influences from these uniquely artistic cities. Now, all grown and raised on music, he has added Nashville to his list of home towns.
Spending his time between Nashville and Seattle, Ross has planted himself firmly in multiple music scenes. This strategy can be hard to pull off, but is actually incredibly clever. Being that we live in a time where any given artist can reach the whole world, having a live connection with multiple music scenes can help an artist’s digital reach tremendously. As much as we may think the internet connects us, it often lacks in making a lasting, personal impact on potential fans. However, it acts like a garden for any artist’s career to expand, so blending a strong online presence with real relationships can expand an artist’s reach tremendously on multiple fronts.
