WTF is an EPK you ask? Your electronic press kit is a vital piece of marketing and branding material you use to book shows, get interviews, and overall promote your music. In this episode of the Nashville Unsigned Podcast, we cover the vitals of what to place in your EPK and how it benefits your music career.
First, we suggest thinking long and hard about your brand. Are you a hard-kicking heavy metal heart-throb? Are you a cognitive country music singer and songwriter? Like, what’s your vibe, man?
When you know exactly who you are, you have to make palpable to everyone else. This is where an EPK comes in. Grab some headshots that express your creative flair, collect some samples of your music, and write yourself a little bio. It is important that all of these things are cohesive to your image. As a result, venues, show-promoters, magazines, or whoever you’re trying to impress will get a clear image of who you are. Above all, stay true to that image. It’s easier to be real than fake a façade.
So, WTF is an EPK? It’s your branded musical resume.
Think about it as a resume. People who are booking shows and festivals need to find a certain style that vibes with their event. Do you think your Americana pop sound is going to fit in at a punk rock festival? Probably not. Therefore, cater your image to the correct demographic. It’s true that uniqueness is vital, but you at least have to be genre-adjacent. In other words, create something true to yourself, but keep in mind where you sound would fit in. When this is understood, you’ll be finding much more success in landing gigs in the right places.
