Grant Terry’s Train Wreck music video is a somber reflection on relationships. Better yet, it’s a reflection on the ways we hurt each other in love. It’s that feeling after a relationship ends– where you’re just piecing yourself back together, taking a breath to figure out life again. It’s cool, we all go through it. You just have to find a song like this to really work it out.
Then, you have to explain all this to someone else. The next proverbial fish in the sea is just gonna’ have to wait for the train wreck to be cleared away. Man, dating is hard, but it makes such good song material. Am I right?
Terry has a laid-back, easy-going style of pop rock. He often leads with a stripped-down acoustic guitar and adds catchy hooks with his voice. With this song, he adds a western element to the backup melodies. This touch of creativity lends to the wash-off-your-whiskey-glass vibe that’s carried throughout the song. In Nashville, which is the love city of country music, Terry is injecting a different kind of western feel to his own sound. Therefore, we can not salute this indie artist enough!
We break down Grant Terry’s Train Wreck music video. What gives it it’s edge?
The video is shot in low-lit rooms of a house, featuring Terry in a hot mess, all alone in the dark with his guitar. The lights in the house are off, and city lights illuminating the Nashville streets outside his window in an orange glow. Terry gives a performance as if he’s sitting at home. It’s like he’s writing the song during the video itself. In addition, the video is shot in low-fidelity. The method is complete with added glitches to further add to the stripped-down nature of the song. Stylized and simple, this video doesn’t go overboard with effects. It’s minimalistic and straight forward, with creative accents to really drive the writing home.
Train Wreck offers a great example of aesthetic. Shooting a video is not always about over-the-top antics, cool special effects or an elaborate storyline. All you really need is the atmosphere, and you can pull of a great deal. Therefore, dropping these minimal, creative elements make a tremendous difference in how the viewer engages the material. As a result, we end up with a well-crafted video all around.
