What I’ve Got
Mile Twenty Four released their follow up single to 2019’s Running single with the catchy, pop-rock love song What I’ve Got from their forthcoming project. The song and lyric video for the track dropped back on Valentines Day, or otherwise known as February 14th, 2020 for all those “date” nerds out there (pun intended).
What The Track’s Got
Getting It Off Your Chest
Just as the song opens up “I just wanted to get this off my chest”, after I heard this song I knew I wanted to get some thoughts on this track down! The song starts off with a soft synths and guitar licks accompanied by soft toned vocals to ease the listener into the hook. When the first verse wraps the listener is introduced to the energy and meaning behind the song. The lyrics walk the listener though a tight knit relationship with the person that’s ALWAYS been there. Through ups, downs, victories, and defeats your significant other is there for you. The lyrics walk us through their appreciation for their partner but also making sure to vocalize they plan to be there for them too in the same capacity
“You are the one that’s always there for me,
In all my victories & in my defeats”
When the chorus comes in we are given a nice bass line, synth bells, with symmetrical writing and annunciation that draws the listener further into the melody. The singer is telling us about how his significant other is there for him. As the first half of the hook wraps, the music drops to highlight the first section of “I’ll be there for you” as it becomes the focal point of the second half of the chorus. This is where we hear first hand the singers want/need to let his partner know he’s going to do the same for them!
Painting The Picture
The song continues to highlight the strength of their relationship in the second verse. Speaking on holding onto their promise to “To keep me around“, suggesting something that is real, strong, and long term. A picture is painted of how the singer views his partner when he compares his partner to the sun singing “You Emulate The Sun, With Your Smile” while reassuring them that it may take some time but “someday I’ll shine“. I find this verse beautifully written. Not only painting a clear picture for the listener but technically as well. In the writing paying a compliment with a metaphor on the sun while then following it up making a reference back to “shining” (…like sun shine). Brilliant work.
Afterward the song takes us back for a second chorus before taking us to a bridge. They perfectly layer in vocals in the foreground and background that mesh seamlessly to repeat the first line from the chorus. The song closes with high energy lead guitars layered over the normal chorus instrumentation to really give the listener a strong closing number to remember the song by.
What The Video’s Got
Run the Tape
Mile Twenty Four couldn’t just release a fire song. They had to do one better and drop a sick Lyric Video to it as well. Normally I wouldn’t put much time into writing on a lyric video. Just as most artists wouldn’t put much effort into the one they made. Although that’s not the case here for both the video or this article.
We are given what appears to be a TV screen. That screen houses the lyrics as if running on an old VHS tape. Through the first few bars it is surrounded in nothing but complete darkness. As we move on a light flashes and we’re able to see it’s an old box TV. Probably from the 80’s or 90’s. As the music starts to pick up we get flashes of the graphics with the lights and lyrics.
When the chorus strikes, the music picks up and so does the video. With each guitar lick we get more & more flashes. When the second half of the chorus the TV and background light up with continues graphics on the screen that match the energy of the song that play behind the “You”. You may or may not catch it but after each chorus they toss in still graphics that when paused play into the song. After the 1st chorus the screen reads “Please stop the projector now. Continue the film when ready”. Telling us to continue to the 2nd verse of the song.
Picking Up The (Graphic) Energy
As we move into the second verse it reverts back to the black surrounded screen. Although in the verse they begin to toss in clips of walking through a red hallway corridor. As the energy picks up in the second half of the verse they layer in images and videos with each hit of the drum snare. Each one different than the last. I challenge you to identify them all! The second verse closes with “Someday I’ll shine”. The graphic that plays in the TV actually read “Oh, Thats Wonderful” as if responding to the lyrics. Yeah they put a lot of thought into this one. I find that cool.
The bridge puts the lyrics scrolling in the background of the screen. Almost as if the teacher had them write it 100 times on the chalkboard after class. No I never had to do that. Lol. That’s definitely not how I thought of that example so quick. (Insert Sarcasm here). The energy of the video follows suit with the song and ends with a lot of energy. The graphics on the TV get crazier and brighter. Drawing the viewer into the whole experience.
Well done Mile Twenty Four fellas and Andrew Smith for Directing. Some fine work indeed!
